The chairman, Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr Soji Adagunodo, has said the party would appeal the judgement of the Appeal panel that upheld the victory of Mr. Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress in the last September election.

Adagunodo, in a telephone chat with Punch correspondent, said the panel relied on a technicality in giving its decision.

“Technicality was what Wole Olanipekun laid before the court. There was no argument about the decision of the Tribunal that gave us victory. We will upturn the judgement at the Supreme Court.

“It is democracy at play. We will study the Appeal Court judgment appropriately and challenge it at the supreme court,”Adagunodo said.

Villarreal Says Samuel Chukwueze Cannot Play In Both AFCON And U20 World Cup

May 09, 2019
The Under-20 World Cup ends in Poland on 15 June with the Nations Cup in Egypt starting six days later.

Samuel Chukwueze

Samuel Chukwueze faces a dilemma after being offered the chance to play for Nigeria at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and Under-20 World Cup.

However his Spanish La Liga side Villarreal have told the 19-year-old that he cannot play in both.

The Under-20 World Cup ends in Poland on 15 June with the Nations Cup in Egypt starting six days later.

"It is a little dilemma that we must try to fix and hopefully there will be a good solution," Rohr told BBC Sport.

"I understand when the club say it is impossible for him to play in the Afcon and youth World Cup.

"Chukwueze has good qualities and we already see why he plays at the top level in Spain."

The winger has scored in La Liga, Europa League and Spanish Cup this season despite only earning promotion to the first team from the reserves.

On the international scene he also made his senior debut for Nigeria against Uganda back in November.

Chukwueze played for his country at under-23 level in March and his stock continues to rise as he was named the Nigeria Football Federation's 2018 Young Player of the Year in April.

"He has an interesting ability which makes him a very important talent for any team he plays with," Rohr added.

"I saw this quality when he played with us and the Olympic team, we must support Chukwueze and our other players too."

An Under-17 World Cup winner with Nigeria in 2015, he has been likened to his hero and Bayern Munich's former Netherlands international winger Arjen Robben.

Chukwueze - who came close to joining Arsenal in 2016 - arrived at Villarreal from Nigeria's Diamond Academy in August 2017.

He joins a growing list of Nigeria's Under-17 World Cup winners who have progressed to the senior national side.

Others are Francis Uzoho, Musa Muhamed, Kelechi Iheanacho, Isaac Success, Victor Osimhen, Dele Alampasu, while brothers Chidiebere and Kelechi Nwakali have also played for the Super Eagles B side.

Bank Customers Lose N3.6bn To Cyberfraud

May 06, 2019

What might differ, he noted, was the approach adopted by the regulators and operators in responding to any such threats.

A total of 63,895 bank customers lost N3.6bn to cyberfraud in two years, 2017 and 2018, the Nigeria Electronic Fraud Forum has disclosed.

The Chairman, NeFF, Sam Okojere, who is also the Director, Payments System Management Department, Central Bank of Nigeria, disclosed this while presenting NeFF’s 2018 annual report on, ‘Emerging fraud threats: An evaluation of the industry cybersecurity posture’ in Lagos.

He said, “In the latest Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System fraud landscape report, it was reported that an actual loss of N2bn was suffered by the industry in 2018 compared to N1.6bn in the preceding year.

“The volume also increased to 38,852 from 25,043 reported in 2017. Of these figures, the mobile channel recorded the highest volume and value, with an estimate of 11,492 in volume and N598.8m in actual loss value, calling for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to tame future escalation.”

He said that phenomenal growth and transformation of any payment system like Nigeria’s, would naturally be accompanied by corresponding growth and sophistication in electronic and cyberfraud schemes.

What might differ, he noted, was the approach adopted by the regulators and operators in responding to any such threats.

In Nigeria, he said, the forum was formed to, among others, foster collaboration among banks, payment service providers, telecom operators, the law enforcement agencies, other regulators and other stakeholders within the payment ecosystem and beyond.

He said that without doubt, the partnership had been successful and was yielding desired results.

According to him, evidence of such partnerships from the past involved major collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser to utilise the Nigerian Computer Emergency Response Team, domiciled in the office, to address cyber challenges faced by members of NeFF.

He said, “There had been ongoing negotiations with the telecommunications industry aimed at taming SIM swap fraud in the country, and the negotiations have reached an advanced stage. The partnership with the telcos is increasingly becoming important considering the behaviour of fraud attempts and losses in the country.”

Figures disclosed by NIBSS revealed that attempted fraud in 2018 was valued at N9bn.

The NIBSS stated, “The ATM channel recorded the second actual loss fraud value. In spite of this remarkable increase in reported fraud volume this year, its actual loss increased by 25.7 per cent in value when compared to last year.”

How Kidnappers Made Elite Nigerian To Abandon Their Cars For Abuja-Kaduna Trains

May 06, 2019
Kidnappers have reportedly made many elite Nigerians to abandon their cars for the Abuja-Kaduna trains.

Entrance to Idu station

The Abuja-Kaduna train service has received a boost in its operations as a result of the activities of kidnappers along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

The rush for train is so intense that securing a first-class ticket has become so difficult.

President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the train line in July 2016 but its patronage was low until 2018 when activities of kidnappers increased on the expressway.

Passengers could now be seen standing during the trip which is a little over two hours.

Many passengers have been abducted with millions of naira paid as ransom.

Last week, Mohammad Abubakar, chairman, board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and his daughter, were among over 20 people abducted.

Passengers in a long queue to purchase ticket

measures put in place by the security agencies, activities of the kidnappers have gone unabated.

When TheCable visited the Idu train station in Abuja on Friday,  passengers had a hard time getting tickets.

A passenger, who simply identified himself as Joshua, said he had been at the train station since 8am trying to get ticket for a train scheduled to move at 2pm.

“I have been here since 8:00 am and I haven’t gotten tickets for the 2:00pm train. We have been given numbers and they said they will start selling tickets by 11:00am,” he said angrily.

“Why would they not make the purchase of these tickets online, it will be easier. I think since the Chinese people still have a stake they want it this way.

“The kidnappings on the road have worsened the situation. I was in Kaduna last week and I had to stand from Rigasa to Abuja. The situation is just sad.”

When the ticket sales finally begun, Joshua who was number 50 in the queue was the person to buy the last first-class ticket.

“They said they have finished selling the first class tickets. You can imagine they started selling tickets at 10:59am and 40 minutes later first class tickets have finished,” he lamented.

Another passenger, who simply identified himself as Ibrahim, said he witnessed some very important personalities (VIP) who boarded the 8:00am train without purchasing tickets.

“Just this morning two coaster buses conveying VIPs boarded the first train to Kaduna, I didn’t see them purchase tickets,” he said.

Ordinarily, the buses would have conveyed them to Abuja but the high rate of insecurity on the road has left many with no other option but the train.

CHAOS PURCHASING TICKETS

The police officers and station security assigned to curb the activities hoodlums buying tickets and reselling at exorbitant prices had a difficult time keeping passengers in line.

It was usual to see passengers shout and scream at those trying to shunt the queue.

At one instance, a lady in the queue attempted to use a brick to assault a station security official whom she accused of allowing a passenger shunt the queue.

It took the intervention of some police officers to calm her. No official at the station was willing to speak to react to the events witnessed.
